The magic of turning bath culture from mere relaxation into a creative experience!

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at LIFESTYLE PROJECTS, led by architect Ryoichi Misawa, at HIDEO TOKYO in Akasaka.
This project transcends the conventional ideas of “living” and “lifestyle,” offering a platform for robust dialogue between experts and professionals about the future of truly fulfilling housing—particularly condos. The theme was “The Tumultuous Tokyo Condominium Market.” While the depth of the discussion was impressive, what truly captivated me was the venue—the HIDEO TOKYO/JAXSON showroom.
The bathtubs there epitomize a sublime fusion of Japan’s ingrained bath culture and the Western bath culture. HIDEO bathtubs were born as the culmination of years of bathtub design by Hideo Shimizu, a designer educated in Milan and the founder of JAXSON.
The showroom reflects soccer player Keisuke Honda’s words: “Those who haven’t put in the work have no right to speak of quality.” While pursuing the luxury of intangible art and seeking to expand my worldview, I found myself completely captivated by this space, questioning whether the concept of quality has become clichéd. The proposal far exceeded my imagination, offering hints of a new quality beyond mere quantity. Situated in prime Akasaka, the exhibit utilizes empty space like musical rests, building anticipation for the next movement (work) with the lingering resonance of the art that has just been experienced—a creative setting that whispers, sparking the imagination and fostering meaningful dialogue, compliments of the spatial magic of HIDEO TOKYO.
I find the “bathtub in the center of the living room” designs in interior magazines gimmicky and uninspiring, but the freestanding bathtubs at HIDEO TOKYO/JAXSON transported me to a world of envious imagination. What moves people’s hearts are solutions crafted with care and countless attempts— such solutions free the bounds of imagination. This showroom epitomizes the idea that “God is in the details.” I highly encourage you to step into this creative world of bath time.
