四季から二季節へ。短い秋の過ごし方『きものでオペラへ』

今年の夏は『観測史上最高』という言葉を何度も聞いた。ついには、春、 秋の期間が極端に短くなり、伝統的な催しなどの形態が変化を強いられている。この暑い季節が長くなる傾向は収まる気配がない。そうなると、この変 化を逆に活用してみてはいかがだろうか。 　
秋と言えば、『芸術の』、『食欲の』、『オシャレの』などの形容詞が接頭語に着く。つまり、何をするにも、始めるにも絶好の季節というわけだ。それに、今まで敷居が高いとされてきた『催し』、『アート』、『装い』にチャレンジしてみるのをお薦めします。その例として、『きものでオペラへ』をご紹介したい。それも、『男の着物』はどうだろうか？着物というと、『お茶会や初釡』、『歌舞伎や能』など、日本の古典芸能や伝統文化の催しの際に着て行くものと思われます。それはそれで、結構な事ではあるものの、大先輩の『一言居士』に面食らうことも心配だ。その点『きものでオペラへ』は、なんの心配もいらない。
何しろ、オペラ会場に着物で来場される方が極端に少ないのである。それでいて、この企画は、男性一人でも、カップルでの参加も、お仲間での参加も、オペラ鑑賞だけでも、アフターのディナー会も全て参加はオプションとなっており、至れり尽くせりなのである。そして、オペラも初めての方も大歓迎ということを是としているので、『初めてのオペラ鑑賞レクチャー』付きであり、パワーポイントと動画を駆使し分かりやすい解説が付き、まるでテレビでも見るような気軽な解説だ。それでいて幕間は、この企画参加者のみの特別ホワイエを貸し切りにし、装いやオペラ談義に花を咲かせることが出来る。この幕間の空気が素晴らしく、スタッフの心遣いがにくいほどいきわたり、それでいて先輩たちが、『きもの仲間が出来た』という、柔らかい雰囲気で満ちているのだ。実は、この『きものでオペラへ』は、歴史があり、コロナ禍の中断を挟んでもう15年続いている。筆者もこの企画できものデビューをしたので体験談として、お読みいただきたい。
また、会場となっている、新国立劇場側も、オペラやバレエ鑑賞を気軽に体験していただきたい反面、華やかなホワイエの雰囲気を醸成したいという想いにもこの企画が一役かっている。着物は畳んで運べるので、海外の装いでも、一枚持っていると装いの幅が広がる。この企画の主催は『銀座もとじ』で、この店舗は、路面店として『男のきもの』として、男性専門店も併設している。当然のことながら、女性の初心者も大歓迎というこの店の方針がありがたい。例えば、この猛暑の夏に『浴衣』でオペラに行ってもいいのか？『季節の袷（あわせ）』（裏地付き）はいつ頃からか？『いつ頃まで単衣（ひとえ）』 でいいのか？そもそも、一張羅として、最初の一枚を最低限の予算で揃えるにはどうしたらいいのか？着付けは？自分で着られるかどうか？など、こんなことから聞いてしまっていいのか？と気が引けそうな初心者を大歓迎してくれるのだ。そして、知識豊富なスタッフは、男女とも比較的若く外国籍のスタッフもおり、洋装のスタッフもいるので、着物の相談に行くのに『着ていく着物がない』という冗談のような話は一切ない。この亜熱帯の日本の四季ならぬ二季の短い秋を欲張って『おきもの』、『オペラ』とデビューしてみませんか？

How to spend the short autumn: ‘To the Opera in Kimono’

This summer, we’ve heard the phrase “hottest on record” countless times. As autumn and spring become extremely short, why not embrace this change and turn it into a new opportunity? Autumn is the perfect season to try something you once considered out of your reach, like attending “To the Opera in Kimono”.
Unlike other occasions where wearing a kimono can feel intimidating, this event is designed to be incredibly welcoming for beginners. You don’t have to worry about strict rules or formal etiquette. The event is open to individuals, couples, and groups, and you have the option to attend just the opera or join the dinner party afterward.
For those new to the opera, a special lecture is provided. During intermission, participants can gather in a private lounge to talk about their outfits and share their love for kimono. This creates a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere where you can feel part of a new community.
This event, “To the Opera in Kimono” has a 15-year history and has the support of the New National Theatre, which wants to make opera more accessible while also creating a vibrant atmosphere in the lobby. Kimono are easy to fold and transport, making them a great addition to your wardrobe, even for overseas trips.
The event is organized by Ginza Motoji, which has a dedicated men’s kimono shop and welcomes beginners of all genders. The store’s policy of welcoming beginners is a huge relief. You can ask anything, from “Can I wear a yukata to the opera in the summer?” to “How do I get my first kimono on a budget?” The knowledgeable staff are happy to answer all questions, no matter how basic, making it easy for you to take the first step. The store even has staff who wear Western clothes, so you don’t have to worry about not having a kimono to wear for your consultation.
