A new take on December: Comfort, the easy way.

After years of travel, I’ve concluded that Tokyo condominiums offer the best comfort in the world—factoring in safety, amenities, cost (thanks, weak yen!), views, and food. Given this year’s tough holiday calendar, I suggest a radical idea: instead of going abroad, let’s fully utilize our homes. My advice starts with maximizing our underutilized shared amenities. Since popular party spaces are fiercely contested during the holidays, let’s rotate parties among friends’ condo amenities in early December to make the most of the space. Next, let’s rethink hospitality. Top caterers and Michelin-starred restaurants are overpriced and rushed during the year-end season. Worse, I’ve often seen well-meaning hosts turn hospitality into self-display by spending the entire time trapped in the kitchen. This excessive home cooking neglects guests and is counterproductive.
If the goal is simply a truly enjoyable time with friends, I recommend suppressing the urge for self-display. Instead, adopt a plan of positive delegation: order catered bentos, have guests bring wine, and the host only provides glasses.
True hospitality means focusing on your guests, not your spatula. Overdoing the cooking only burdens you and makes your guests uneasy. To fully enjoy your “OFF” time and avoid sighing over a mountain of post-party cleanup, the key is simple: don’t go overboard with anything. This method, which I’ve seen successfully implemented by a luxury brand owner, ensures a fulfilling party for everyone.
Embrace this “positive cutting corners” approach. A rich, relaxing moment can be created by the simple decision to outsource cleaning, childcare, or party prep. Imagine enjoying the night view from your home, unburdened by cleanup—that is the perfect way to spend the year-end of Reiwa.
