Plácido Domingo: A fitting grand finale!

I believe most people, even those unfamiliar with opera, know the “Three Tenors”: Pavarotti, Domingo, and Carreras. Thirty-five years ago, their concert celebrating Carreras’s recovery became an “Opera Big Bang”—a legendary vocal competition that brought opera into the public consciousness globally, aided by the Japanese boom surrounding Pavarotti’s rendition of ‘Nessun dorma’ at the Turin Olympics. This event created a new base of fans who discovered the intellectual curiosity and emotional depth of opera. Pavarotti has passed away, leaving only Domingo and Carreras active. Domingo has been tirelessly active, transitioning to his original baritone register and captivating us with his natural talent, acting, and powerful spinto voice. I know this day was inevitable, but as someone who has enjoyed opera for over 50 years, I find “deep emotion” inadequate to describe the feeling; my heart cries out, “He can still sing!” I am determined to witness his final program, which showcases his versatility with opera arias, Italian canzoni, and Spanish zarzuela.
Simultaneously, the Hungarian State Opera is staging a touring production of Mozart’s final opera, The Magic Flute. This Masonic-themed masterpiece, which champions freedom, equality, and fraternity, is a profound work that both children and adults can enjoy, provided they prepare beforehand. With Domingo’s performance and The Magic Flute lined up, I plan to thoroughly study them in advance. I sincerely hope to meet everyone at the venues to share these historical moments and emotions.
