Carrying the Weight of Vienna’s Sound:
The Sublime Voice of the Bösendorfer Piano.

For someone like myself, who has researched the “Vienna Tone” through its composers and artists for over a quarter-century, I must touch upon the Bösendorfer piano in this feature.
Among the world’s great pianos, it is this instrument that radiates a unique character and stands as a solitary presence, guarding and inheriting the traditions of Vienna.
The Model 280VC coexists within an “aesthetic of contradiction” upon first listen. It always carries the DNA of the Vienna Tone, fulfilling its responsibility to the city. The Imperial features nine extra keys that are never played; they are hidden away solely for sympathetic resonance—a formidable pursuit of the Vienna Tone. As someone present at the venue, I feel—without bias—that it was an objectively magnificent Mozart performance. The melody did not betray Viennese tradition; rather, it elevated it.
The Vienna Tone is an “aesthetics of subtraction” that cannot be fully captured by terms like Kyoto’s etiquette or Wabi-sabi; indeed, it may even be uncouth to try and put it into words.
The Vienna Tone of a Bösendorfer is a supreme timbre that can only be delivered by a master when the listener opens their heart with a clear mind. By using expensive solid spruce even for the rim to achieve a “rich and deep resonance,” this is a masterpiece—the fruition of a pursuit of the Vienna Tone that completely disregards profitability.
