“Places worth visiting” and “places to definitely visit.”

I’ve traveled extensively for work, so I’m often asked for travel recommendations. My answers fall into two categories: places “worth visiting” and places you “must visit.” One place that’s “worth visiting” is Lisbon. I can’t quite pinpoint what makes it so good, but that’s part of its charm. It lacks world-famous museums or iconic landmarks, making it seem rather unassuming. But that’s precisely its appeal. For a capital city, it has a wonderfully easygoing atmosphere.
Lisbon is known as the city of seven hills, where adorable, winding trams run up and down the slopes. From the hilltops, you can enjoy the slow flow of the Tagus River, while the city below is colored by beautiful blue tile walls called azulejos. As you walk, the smell of grilled salted cod fills the air, whetting a Japanese appetite.
You also can’t miss Fado. This traditional Portuguese music, often compared to Japanese enka, is full of melancholy themes like heartbreak and longing. It’s typically performed by a singer with a Portuguese and a classical guitar. Lisbon is filled with bars where you can listen to live Fado while enjoying local wine.
The beauty of Lisbon, in the end, may be its excellent balance. The interplay between the blazing sun and the shadows on the cobblestones, the blend of historic streets and modern buildings, and the lively city center contrasted with the quiet back alleys create a comfortable, slightly slower pace of life.
The other place, which you “must visit,” is the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. I won’t go into detail here, as I’ve written about it before, but it is an incredibly thought-provoking place. When people ask me, “Why would you go to such a scary place?” I tell them the real fear lies not in visiting, but in choosing to look away from its history.
The ability to travel the world freely is a sign of peace. This makes me feel that there are some places we should visit while we still can. So, where will you travel to next?
