アウシュビッツという、暗く、思い、人類の恥ずべき遺産。
でもだからこそ、そこに行くべきだし、そこからたくさんのことを考えださなくてはならない。

少し前に「関心領域」という映画が話題になった。 アウシュビッツ収容所から壁一枚を隔てた場所で幸せそうに暮らすドイツ将校、ルドルフ・ヘスの一家の日常を描いた作品。 隣ではユダヤ人をはじめとした約110万人が虐殺されているというのに、なにもないように普通の生活が営まれている。 この映画には残虐なシーンは一切ない。 ナチスに対する怒りの言葉もない。 物語は淡々と進み、明確な答えはない。 でもそこには強烈な問題提起があり、 そして観客は考えさせられる。
5年ほど前にポーランドへ行った。 ワルシャワに向かう途中にクラクフへ立ち寄ることになり、ならばとアウシュビッツに行くことにした。アウシュビッツには中谷さんという唯一の日本人ガイドがいる。行く前にメールでコンタクトをとり、 当日は案内してもらえることになった。
強烈な体験だった。 生々しい姿で残る収容所内を巡りながら、ずっと鳥肌が立っていた。 特にアウシュビッツ第二収容所のビルケナウには破壊された後のガス室が残されていて、 その瓦礫を呆然と眺めた。 （敗戦が見えたときナチスは、証拠隠滅のためにガス室を徹底的に破壊した）

収容所内を案内しながら中谷さんが語るのは、例えばこんな話。 「大量虐殺をして、焼き、流す。 そこで排水が問題になりました。 収容所の周囲では普通に暮らす人たちがいて、また環境破壊にもなるので、汚れた水を垂れ流すわけにはいかないからです。そしてそのときすでに、汚水を浄化する知識や技術をナチスはもっていた。いまから80年近く昔に。それほどまでに高度な知性があるのに、どうしてこれほど酷いホロコーストを行ったのでしょうか」。 中谷さんの説明はほとんど、どうして？ でフェードアウトしていく。
「関心領域」も中谷さんも問いかけで終わる。だからこちらは考える。本を読み、映画を観て、ニュースをチェックする。答えはわからない。そうしているうちに、そんなに酷いめにあったユダヤ人がいまなぜ、パレスチナを？という問いかけが生まれる。そしてまた考える。本を読み、映画を観て、ニュースをチェックする。やっぱり答えはわからない。だけど世界が理不尽で不可解なことはわかった。
アウシュビッツは重く、辛い。でも誰もが行くべき場所。

Auschwitz is a dark, heavy, and shameful heritage of humanity.
Because of this, we must visit it and reflect deeply.

A while ago, the movie "The Zone of Interest" gained attention. It depicted Rudolf Höss's family living happily just a wall away from Auschwitz, while 1.1 million people, including Jews, were massacred next door. The movie contains no brutal scenes or angry words against the Nazis. The story unfolds slowly, offering no clear answers but raising powerful questions.
About five years ago, I visited Poland. On the way to Warsaw, I stopped by Krakow and then visited Auschwitz. There, I arranged a tour with Mr. Nakaya, the only Japanese guide, via email before my visit.
It was an intense experience. Touring the vividly preserved camp gave me goosebumps. At Birkenau, the second Auschwitz camp, the ruins of the gas chambers remain, and I stared at the rubble in a daze. (The Nazis destroyed the gas chambers to eliminate evidence when about to be defeated.)

As Mr. Nakaya guided me through the camp, he shared stories like this: “They committed mass murder, burned the bodies, and threw the ashes. Wastewater management became an issue because people lived around the camp, and environmental damage was a concern. Nearly 80 years ago, the Nazis already had the knowledge and technology to purify wastewater. How could they possess such advanced intelligence yet commit such horrors?” Most of Mr. Nakaya’s explanations ended with “Why?”
Both “The Zone of Interest” and Mr. Nakaya's explanations end with questions, prompting reflection. We read, watch, and check the news but find no answers. New questions arise, such as why the Jews, who suffered so much, now oppress the Palestinians. So we continue to think, read, watch, and check the news. We still have no answers, but we realize the world is irrational and incomprehensible.
Auschwitz is heavy and painful, but everyone should visit it.
