アートに暮らせる街ってどこだろうか？
考えれば考えるほど、それはパリだったという話。

「アートに暮らす」。そのテーマに最もふさわしい街はどこだろうかと考えてみた。絵画にあるような美しい街並みで、天井のない美術館と呼ばれているブルージュ。もうひとつの天井のない美術館と呼ばれている街、ルネッサンス文化の中心だったフィレンツェ。ガウディをはじめとしたモデルニスモ建築が街のそこかしこにあるバルセロナ。中世の面影が色濃く残る水の都 ヴェネツィア。どこもうっとりするほど魅力的だけど、でもやはり、アートに暮らしたければパリではないだろうか。

東京の山手線内ほどの広さに美術館やギャラリーがたくさんあるパリ。ルーヴルやオルセー、ポンピドゥー、オランジェリーといった有名どころをはじめ、ピカソやモロー、ロダン、ジャコメッティといった、ある作家に特化、あるいは元アトリエを美術館にしているところ。フォンダシオン ルイ・ヴィトンやカルティエ財団現代美術館のように企業が運営しているところ。そしてさらに、いたるところに現代アートのギャラリーがあるマレ地区をはじめ、なんてことのない道沿いの壁にもストリートアートが描かれている。パリではアートを目にしないで歩くほうが難しいくらい。

For the special feature of this issue of yoff, on the theme of “Living with Art,” we pondered which city best embodies this concept. Bruges, akin to a painting with its charming streets, is an open-air museum. Florence, heart of the Renaissance, shares this title. Barcelona is adorned with the Modernist architecture of Gaudi and others, while Venice’s medieval charm persists. All these cities captivate, but for a true art immersion, Paris might just be the unparalleled choice.

Paris, comparable in size to the area of Tokyo delimited by the Yamanote train line, is rich with museums and galleries. It boasts renowned attractions like the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, and Musée de l’Orangerie, alongside museums dedicated to artists like Picasso, Moreau, Rodin, Giacometti, and still others converted from the studios of artists. There are corporate-sponsored venues like the Fondation Louis Vuitton and Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art. And then there is the Marais quarter, which abounds with contemporary art galleries, and where street art can be found on walls along ordinary streets. Art is an inescapable part of life in Paris.

街並みもそれ自体がアートそのもの。モネやカイユボットをはじめとした芸術家たちが描いたパリの風景は、いまもそのまま残っていて、そこにいるだけで絵のなかに入ったような感覚になる。いま流行の「アート没入体験」なんてイベントはいらない。

そういえばウディ・アレンの「ミッドナイト・イン・パリ」は、まさにそんな映画だった。ピカソ、ダリ、マティス、さらにはフィッツジェラルドやヘミングウェイがいた1920年代のパリにタイムスリップするという話。一種のSFだけど、これが違和感ない。つまりパリって、そんな街。昔も今も、パリこそが芸術の都。

The cityscapes themselves are artistic masterpieces. Landscapes by Monet and Caillebotte still mirror present-day Paris, making you feel part of a living painting and voiding the need for the “immersive art experiences” in vogue today.

Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” captures this essence perfectly. It’s a tale of time-traveling to the 1920s Paris, home to icons like Picasso, Dali, Matisse, Fitzgerald, and Hemingway. While it’s a kind of sci-fi, it feels natural and aligns perfectly with the Parisian spirit. Paris, past and present, remains the quintessential city of art.
