Precisely because we live in an era where speaking one’s mind in the media is taboo, engaging with the musical arts can offer catharsis through the sublimation of taboos. Salons are spaces where people can talk quietly after sharing such taboos. An intimate gathering of people in a relaxing living room or other space, talking freely about the art they have experienced, is not somewhere where harassment can sneak in. Time spent in such a place frees the heart. Art is eminently suitable as a topic for such discussions. Were we able to share taboos flexibly and intelligently, salons and such places would turn into hotbeds of fun but controversial intellectual curiosity. Interestingly, over ninety percent of wedding ceremonies play Wagner’s Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin, which ironically is a prelude to separation. In other words, this is an ominous song that is an exceedingly unsuitable choice for walking down the aisle. This kind of talk is not tolerable at weddings, where it would constitute harassment.
Additionally, the film The Godfather, admired by many, incorporates traps meticulously set by director Francis Ford Coppola. It intricately references scenes from the opera piece Cavalleria Rusticana, an understanding of which is required to grasp the essence of the film. The film uses a montage technique in which opera scenes foreshadow assassinations, like a play within a play, and those who know opera anticipate the next scene with palpitating hearts. The tragic inevitability of the mafia’s fate and the opera mesh beautifully, enhancing the narrative. The final scene, in which Al Pacino cries while holding his daughter against the interlude of the opera, hints at the Ave Maria, suggesting the prayerful calm before the coming storm. The ending, deeply symbolic, evokes the mafia’s irrevocable fate, a cycle of prayers and revenge. Discussing the traps set by Coppola can be delightful indeed.
