アートブームの光と影なぜ 日本では「有名な画家、有名な音楽」ばかり人気があるのか?

Art booms and dark shadows:
why japan fixates on household names.

In September, Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring”—the “Mona Lisa” of the North— arrived in Osaka, sparking a ticket frenzy.
Once known simply as “Girl with a Blue Turban”, it was obscure in Japan, and Vermeer himself was forgotten for 200 years. Initially sold for roughly 13,000 yen in today’s money, 19th-century restoration and a hit novel transformed it into a masterpiece where even a brief glance is now a rarity.
The Mauritshuis in The Hague lent “Girl with a Pearl Earring” abroad during a full renovation; it will likely never return to Japan in my lifetime. Meanwhile, “La Gioconda” (“Mona Lisa”) will soon move to a dedicated room in the Louvre, requiring an extra fee beyond general admission. I recall hosting a private dinner directly before “La Gioconda” after closing hours years ago—an unthinkable event today.
Without complaining, Tokyo overflows with world-class art that often goes unnoticed, including incredible masterpieces by Seiki Kuroda and Tsuguharu Fujita. After all, Tokyo was the only place “La Gioconda” was ever exhibited outside the Louvre.
Introducing obscure masterpieces rarely captures immediate interest. Forgive my cheeky intent to instead point you toward landmark exhibitions and send you into the crowds.
First, “Joy of Life: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum brings Jean-François Millet’s “The Gleaners” alongside works by Claude Monet.
Additionally, Leonardo da Vinci’s “La Belle Ferronière” makes its Japanese debut at “The Louvre Museum Exhibition: Renaissance.” A masterpiece of Renaissance portraiture, Leonardo’s surviving works total fewer than eighteen; having one in Tokyo makes another fierce ticket battle inevitable.
Tokyo is a treasure trove of free masterpieces and opera. Rather than following the crowd because something is famous, tune into your own aesthetic sensibilities and let art enrich your soul.
