Seeking coolness at waterfalls.
People often say that summers are getting hotter. Summers are supposed to be warm, but heat levels now often exceed our expectations. Is it due to climate change? Perhaps, and this needs addressing, but we also need to handle today’s actual heat. The intense heat won’t wait.
People have various ways to stay cool: Vacations at resorts, local pools, shaved ice treats. Which one is your preference?
Here is someone who is passionate about visiting waterfalls, Ayako Sakazaki. Since her university days, she has made it her life’s work to visit waterfalls across Japan and share their charm. The coolness of waterfalls is indeed attractive. Surrounded by lush trees, large volumes of water cascading down with a misty spray fills the air with negative ions, bringing a sense of relaxation and deep calm. You might find yourself wanting to stand there, lost in thought. Just imagining it feels refreshing.
Alright, let’s go see a waterfall! But first, let’s learn about waterfalls from Sakazaki. If she has made it her life’s work to share their charm, there must be more than just coolness to waterfalls. We might hear thrilling stories as invigorating as standing under a waterfall.

Experiencing waterfalls in uniquely Japanese ways.
“Did you know that waterfalls have genders?” Sakazaki begins, immediately broaching the topic from an unexpected angle. “There are masculine waterfalls that are powerful and frightening, and feminine ones that are soft and delicate. Facing a majestic waterfalls that inspires awe can be humbling.” Sakazaki became fascinated with waterfalls because she wanted to get closer to their dynamic wonder and absorb their power.
Growing up with little nature, Sakazaki got her driver’s license at 18 and her encounter with a waterfall on a drive moved her deeply. Ensuing visits to various waterfalls revealed that each has a unique character—fierce, gentle, cool. She began viewing waterfalls as people and started traveling around Japan to find them.
“Healing is a major appeal of waterfalls, but there’s more. Japanese waterfalls embody traditions, culture, and folklore that we Japanese should cherish.
For example, Nachi Falls on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route in Wakayama, one of Japan’s three famous waterfalls, is considered sacred. A wild fire festival illustrating Japan’s unique relationship with waterfalls is held at the base of that waterfall.” Sakazaki also highlights the geological aspects: “Japan’s clustered volcanic plates cause tectonic shifts, creating level differences where rivers flow in places of heavy rainfall, creating waterfalls. Understanding the local geology and topography through waterfalls is fascinating.”
Which waterfall has left the biggest impression on you? “A few stand out, like Yasu Falls in Akita, with its grand drop of water from the heavens. Sadly, it’s now closed to visitors. I also love the waterfalls in the Kumano area of Wakayama, rich in spiritual significance with their Matagi hunters and ascetics. It’s this deep spirituality that draws me to them.”

Chill out by creating soil and growing vegetables.
Kamakura: The traditional Japanese summer retreat Kamakura, Japan’s traditional summer retreat, is now crowded with tourists, but a short journey away lies Kamakurayama, where the deep greenery and bird songs create a tranquil atmosphere.
“Living here alone lets you enjoy the coolness,” says Jiro Aoki, an art director residing in Kamakurayama. Known for his famous ad campaigns, he is a very creative individual.
“The joy of living here comes from the rich natural environment and my home garden.” Aoki utilizes his spacious balcony to grow various plants, including baby leaves, rosemary, tomatoes, lettuce, citrus, watermelon, and Delaware grapes. Interacting with these plants helps him chill out.
“When I find something interesting, I get deeply involved. That’s why I started with soil preparation for growing plants. You can’t just dispose of excess soil as garbage, so I decided to use it. By mixing in bacteria and letting it ferment, I can replace the soil and grow vegetables and fruits with exceptional taste.” Surrounded by Kamakura’s lush nature, Aoki creates soil and grows vegetables and fruits, enriching his senses with this slow-paced lifestyle.

Relaxing by making a home in a camp.
Many seek coolness by heading to campsites. Interior stylist and coordinator Rieko Inoue camps monthly. Her goal isn’t just to cool off, but to enjoy eating and drinking with close friends in nature and sleeping under the stars.
“For me, camping is like creating a home. The tent is the bedroom, the campfire area is the kitchen, and the space where everyone relaxes is the living and dining room. I choose the tent spot based on whether the bedroom is cozy and the living and dining area have a good view. This might be a different perspective from serious campers.” As an interior design creator, her points of focus are unique.
About her favorite ways to spend time at camp, she says, “I love napping in my favorite chair, chilling by the river, and watching the campfire while sipping a drink.” Enjoying leisure moments is a true luxury.
Inoue also has special affection for her camping gear. “Camping gear is lightweight and minimal. Functionality is key, but it can be quite rugged. So, I add soft touches, like covering gas canisters with leather sleeves for a gentler feel. I consider camping gear as part of the interior and make it charming and fun.”
Camping offers different joys for everyone. Find your own way to enjoy nature for a very pleasant chill-out experience.

Relaxing in the world of Chinese tea.
“I cool off with tea,” says Eimi Sato, an office consultant at Kokuyo, who recently became fascinated with Chinese tea.
“Chinese tea comes in six types: red, yellow, blue, green, white, and black. I choose based on how I feel. When I want to cool down, green tea is the best. The taste is refreshing, and the green leaves unfurling when I pour hot water is beautiful and soothing.”
The aroma of Chinese tea is another attraction. “You can steep it multiple times, and the first and second brews have incredible aroma. Even the leaves after brewing have a pleasant scent.” What’s her favorite Chinese tea? “I love Mi Lan Xiang, a blue oolong tea with a lychee scent that relaxes me. But I prefer it in the colder months.”
She says Chinese tea has great depth, and some can cost tens of thousands of yen. “For example, tea leaves from the Wuyi Mountains in northern Fujian Province once sold for 2.7 million yen for 20 grams. Chinese tea is similar to the world of wine.”

Violinist Chika Edanami, who possesses beauty akin to a model and even greater musical talent and skill, is frequently invited as a guest concertmaster by the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and other venues. She also leads the orchestra project ORCHESTRA POSSIBLE, making her a leading figure in the current classical music scene.
Edanami’s chill-out method is drinking. She finds having drinks with the audience who came to listen to her music most relaxing. “I enjoy drinking with people who heard me perform. Sharing the same music deepens communication, and I love the feeling of everyone becoming one.” Sharing her love of music with others after the stage is her thing.
Drinking and having fun together gives me a lot of energy, which fuels my next stage. I’m grateful for such moments.”
Why does she prefer relaxing in a lively setting rather than alone in silence? “When I think about it, I’m usually alone. Whether practicing the violin or in daily life, I rarely talk to anyone. So, these festive moments are precious to me. My post-concert drinking sessions are well-known, and people look forward to them as much as the concert itself.” Discussing music over drinks with Edanami sounds like a perfect way to chill out for anyone.

A pairing of unique sweets and domestic wine brings cool,
delicious happiness to everyone.
Under the theme of “Chill Out with Food,” patissier Nakamura came up with a pairing of unique sweets and wine.
First, grilled eggplant ice cream. This ice cream, which tastes remarkably like grilled eggplant and is surprisingly delicious, is made using the étuvée method, utilizing only the moisture from the ingredients. Typically, vanilla ice cream’s moisture is 100% from milk, but here, 50% is from grilled eggplant. But why eggplant?
“Eggplant is widely consumed in Europe. I wanted to use this popular ingredient in a dessert. Grilling brings out the best flavor in eggplant, so I turned it into ice cream.“one.” Sharing her love of music with others after the stage is her thing. Another confection features a scone served with clotted cream mixed with honey. But this is no ordinary scone. “This scone is made using only the moisture from strawberries. It doesn’t get dry and has a rich flavor. The acidity enhances the sweetness,” Nakamura explains. Next to the scone is rhubarb jam with a touch of rose.
These original sweets are paired with a domestic wine. The playful sweetness of the confections complements the mature flavors of the wine, producing a delightful experience.
