Crisis for World-Class Music Arts in Tokyo!
A Rush of Classic Hall Renovations Hits the Capital

Architect Kunio Maekawa’s masterpiece, Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, completed in 1961, enters a three-year renovation this May. For 65 years, it served as Tokyo’s classical music sanctuary alongside Le Corbusier’s National Museum of Western Art.
Additionally, Kioi Hall, a chamber music sanctuary, is closed all year for repairs. Kanagawa Kenmin Hall remains closed without a set reopening date. Consequently, the New National Theatre, Tokyo in Shinjuku is the only venue capable of full-scale opera and ballet. Yet as a national institution, it offers few private rentals, focusing mainly on in-house productions. Since classical music relies on acoustic sound, 2,000 seats is the capacity limit. This does not invalidate dome or large-scale PA-amplified entertainment, but acoustic arts require halls with rich natural resonance.
Looking at traditional Japanese music, the National Theatre in Hanzomon faces a halted reconstruction due to zero bidding contractors, leaving performers searching for venues. Currently, they manage using the New National Theatre’s Medium Theatre or Shinbashi Enbujo.
Amidst this crisis, Nissei Theatre stands out as the final stronghold for the “2027-2030 Problem.” Designed by architect Togo Murano and completed in 1963, it features a heavy exterior of reddish Mannari granite, recessed Oriental-style windows with black pattern handrails, and a marble mosaic floor by Roka Hasegawa leading inside. Curved lines and dignified pink seats create a serene ambiance, softly wrapping audiences in expectation. Red-carpeted grand and spiral staircases remind visitors that they too contribute to the creative experience.
Artwork throughout the venue enriches moments before the curtain, during intermissions, and after shows. I sincerely hope this theatre supports displaced artists as a savior. This November, Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni will play here, conducted by Ryuichiro Sonoda. I long to seek musical nourishment for my weary soul.
