「下高井戸シネマ」

A movie theater weaving history with the community.
Shimo-Takaido Cinema creates unique lineups while also collaborating with local events, offering a rich variety of cinematic experiences.

It’s the kind of theater that makes you want to live nearby. About ten years ago, I even looked for a place in Shimo-Takaido but didn’t find anything. Still I kept coming back to this theater. Shimo-Takaido Cinema is a repertory theater, showing films after their initial release, as well as older classics. With its excellent film selection, it felt like the perfect movie theater for me. When did it open? “In the early 1950s,” says Haruka Kinoshita, Director of Cinema Avenue, which manages Shimo-Takaido Cinema. “My father ran it before I took over five years ago.” So, you grew up with films as part of your everyday life? “Yes, but I didn’t come here often—it was my parents’ workplace, so it felt awkward.” Still, Kinoshita’s love for film led her to take over the business. “I was deeply moved by Howards End. Even if you’ve seen countless films, there’s always one that leaves a lasting impact. I hope to offer such transformative experiences at Shimo-Takaido Cinema.” By watching a wide range of films, you discover new perspectives. “That’s why we feature a diverse selection of genres here. Plus, members can buy tickets for just ¥990, making it easier to try different types of films. Who knows? A genre you thought you didn’t like might surprise you with a hidden gem. I want people to explore as much as they can.”The theater also engages with the local community. “We’re participating in the Shimotaka Music Festival in October by screening music films like The Phantom of the Opera and Ryuichi Sakamoto|Opus. We’re also collaborating with the Setagaya Literary Museum’s ‘Century of Novels and Films’ exhibition to show films like The Name of the Rose and Death in Venice.” The deeper its connection with the community, the more Shimo-Takaido Cinema becomes an essential part of local life. Speaking of the cinema, I noticed a beer called CINEMA ALE at the concession stand—is that an original product? “Yes, it’s a craft beer inspired by A Clockwork Orange. Since the main character Alex drinks milk, we gave it a silky texture. It’s a stout beer with a hint of orange, delicious even at room temperature. Perfect to enjoy slowly while watching a movie.” This theater not only brings people closer through films but also offers a personal touch, right down to the beer. I still dream of living in a neighborhood with a Shimo-Takaido Cinema.
